Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. Genesis 3:1 NKJV
Our great Creator God is the all-wise and almighty God, the Sustainer of our vast universe. He has everything in His hands and makes no mistakes, not even when He allowed the serpent to deceive Eve. Adam and Eve were responsible to obey God’s Word. Instead, they gave preference to the serpent. With his subtle question about what God had actually said, doubt entered Eve’s mind as she started to reason in herself instead of letting her husband, the legitimate head of creation deal with it.
Eve started seeing things from the serpent’s perspective, thinking that maybe something was lacking with God’s command not to eat of that specific tree. Did God really love them when He gave that command? Not only that, Eve added something to the word God had spoken, just as she removed something from it. This reduced the impact of God’s word and made her ready to argue with God. She started to reason with the serpent (Satan), a futile endeavor for her, because the serpent is very clever. If we start to discuss with Satan, we will lose, guaranteed. Our safety is to heed the Word of God: obey and keep it. “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way.”
What a disaster! Listening to the serpent, Eve did not honor her husband. Worse, Adam transgressed God’s commandment, whereas the serpent deceived Eve so she became his “instrument” to influence her husband. Adam transgressed God’s commandment, knowingly, willingly, intentionally. Yet this debacle opened the door to God’s solution, as it introduced the Lord Jesus, who became a Man, able and willing to die, to take our place. He led a perfect life of obedience and could have gone back to heaven. Instead, He went to Calvary’s cross and died, taking our place. As the perfect Sacrifice He honored God in those six hours of suffering. He atoned for man’s sin for the eternal blessing of those who believe.
