Now the days of David drew near that he should die, and he charged Solomon his son, saying: “I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. And keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn.” 1 Kings 2:1–3 NKJV
The end of David’s life was not easy for this man of God. His oldest living son, Adonijah, exalted himself and, with the aid of Joab and Abiathar the priest, attempted to make himself king against God’s explicit will. When David was informed of this, he gave orders to anoint Solomon king, and have him ride on David’s own mule and be seated on the throne of the kingdom. All this was done with great joy and loud rejoicing according to the record in 1 Kings 1.
In chapter 2 we read David’s final personal charge to his son. He urges Solomon to be strong and prove himself a man by obeying God’s Word as expressed in the Law of Moses—the only way to true prosperity and success, and to the enjoyment of God’s promises. How much better than acting in independence and self-will!
Earlier in life David had referred to Solomon’s youth and lack of experience. Now he encourages him, repeatedly expressing his confidence in him. He tells Solomon to show kindness to the sons of one who had shown kindness to him at a very difficult time. David also tells Solomon to deal according to his wisdom with matters of justice he confesses he had not handled successfully during his own lifetime. It may be difficult, but it is vital that a father recognize the wisdom his child may have and humbly admit his own failures. Let us trust, encourage, and help young people do what is appropriate, ever pointing them to the Lord!
