He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Romans 8:32 NKJV

Freely Give

How much does the Father love us? This is a question that we are not fully able to fathom, to comprehend, to understand. When Abraham offered up his son Isaac, his only son, the one whom he loved, we are in awe (Gen. 22). Which one of us would be able to do so? But we know that God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son. This is the One of whom He said from heaven on two occasions, “this is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” He is the One of whom Proverbs 8:30 speaks: when God was creating the universe, His Son was there at His side being daily His delight. And He is the same One who came to do His will, whose “food” was to do the will of Him who sent Him “and to finish His work” (Jn. 4:34).

It has been said that the value of an object is what one is willing to pay for it. To think we have been purchased by the blood of Christ! This was our value in the eyes of God, that He was willing to give His Son, the One who always, perfectly, completely did God’s will. He is the One who was the Father’s delight, but the Holy and Righteous God forsook Him on the cross as He bore our sins so that we would be saved. This is the measure of God’s love for us. Having this enter into our hearts, as we meditate on and revel in the above verse from Romans, should give us such peace and confidence knowing that He who did not spare His Son will now also freely give us all things.

By Thee, O God, invited, we look unto the Son,

In whom Thy soul delighted, who all Thy will has done;

And by the one chief treasure Thy bosom freely gave,

Thine own pure love we measure, Thy willing mind to save.
