We know the expression, “Like father, like son.” But was it really the case with Amon? In fact, Amon was different from his father in one important thing. Perhaps you have already noticed it when reading his deeds in the above verse: “he did not humble himself before the Lord, as his father Manasseh had humbled himself.”

Amon knew very well what had happened to his father, and he witnessed the changes in his life. But it seems that it may have been good for his father, but not for him. Thus, he imitated his father in everything, except one! He was even “buried in his tomb in the garden of Uzza” (2 Ki. 21:26), the same place where his father had been buried. But as far as humbling himself, he did not do it. Yet, it was truly the only thing necessary. Like father, like son, except in the most important thing: repentance. And he lost everything.

Amon reigned only two years. Maybe he thought that time was on his side. Enjoy life a little, then, like his father, repent. We do not know, but one thing we can remember is that tomorrow is not ours. Amon could not count on tomorrow, waiting until a later time to humble himself before God. And we must learn “to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Ps. 90:12).

If “now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2), it is also now that we can “serve the living and true God,” waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ from heaven (1 Th. 1:9–10). If we make plans, let us say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that” (Jas. 4:15).

Tomorrow is not ours. The Lord is coming. Today is the day we have to do the things that are pleasing to Him.
