I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness in the great assembly; indeed, I do not restrain my lips, O Lord, You Yourself know. I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly. Psalm 40:9–10 NKJV
These verses belong to the second part of this messianic psalm, which presents the Lord Jesus as the Burnt Offering. Here we have the language of One who came to do the Father’s will, and we view a five-fold message that goes out, not only to the great assembly, but to all mankind.
First, He declares that He proclaimed the good news of righteousness. The Lord Jesus loved righteousness, He lived righteousness, He preached righteousness, and His finished work on the Cross satisfied the righteousness of God. It was Christ Jesus “whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness” (Rom. 3:25). This is the theme of the Book of Romans.
Next, He came forth to declare the faithfulness of God. Jeremiah could say, “Great is Your faithfulness.” In the New Testament we read of our God being faithful multiple times.
Thirdly, the Lord Jesus declared the salvation of the Lord! This is a salvation from the penalty of sin, from the power of sin, and soon from the presence of sin!
The last two proclamations concern lovingkindness and truth. Throughout the life of our Lord, we see Him revealing the heart of the Father in His lovingkindness and truth, a perfect balance of both! Love can never be separate from truth! It flows from the heart of a God who is true (Jn. 3:33), through His Son who is truth (Jn. 14:6), and revealed to us through the Spirit of Truth (Jn. 14:17). Let us worship Him today!
