God has chosen you from the beginning to salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: whereto He has called you by our glad tidings, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 2:13–14 JND

God’s Call (9)—Called by the Gospel Unto Glory

Paul could give thanks for the Thessalonian saints, “brethren beloved of the Lord” (v. 13). We may not always feel loved, but we are loved by the Lord more than we can even understand.

We are told that God chose these believers (and us, too) from the beginning to salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. Sanctification is the work of the Holy Spirit who sets us apart to God. While there is “progressive sanctification” where believers become more set apart to God, increasing in holiness and Christ-likeness, it is important to see that in the Word of God sanctification is most often used of the once-for-all setting apart to God.

Next, our salvation is through the belief of the truth. This is our side. We are delivered from our deceitful hearts and from the devil who is a liar from the beginning (Jn. 8:44).

Then, God called these saints (and ourselves) through the gospel: “called you by our glad tidings” (v. 14). Our God uses the good news of the gospel to call people to Himself. Let us pray for the gospel call which is still going out!

What was the end in view of God’s call? We are called to the obtaining of the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. How great are the thoughts of our God and Father! He has called us, not to leave us in the condition in which we were, but that we might share the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. We will first share His glory in heaven. In addition, “When the Christ is manifested who is our life, then shall ye also be manifested with Him in glory” (Col. 3:4). When the Lord comes again to earth, we shall share in His public glory here. Amazing grace!
