God’s Call (2)—The Call to Service

In our texts today, we see God’s call to two men to serve Him. In a similar way, He calls believers today to serve Him, too.

In 1 Corinthians 1:1, we see that the apostle Paul describes himself as a called apostle or apostle by calling. It was not his own decision to become an apostle, but the decision of the Father. He was called to salvation (Gal. 1:15) and then he was called to service. In principle this is true for each one of us. We have been called to salvation (1 Cor. 1:24, 26) and then called to service. Today this service may involve more public service, as evangelists, teachers, and shepherds (Eph. 4:11). Or it may involve more behind-the-scenes service like “helps” (1 Cor. 12:28). We believe that this last gift is very underutilized in the Church today!

In our verses, we see Moses called out of the burning thorn-bush. This indicates the character of his service, which was to bring the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt. Today, the Lord may sometimes indicate our area of service from the beginning. At other times we must first serve in smaller roles, and if we are faithful in that which is least, we prove that we will be faithful in much (Lk. 16:10).

Bezaleel was called by Jehovah for a special work, to help in the construction of the tabernacle. At different times we may be called for a special purpose or for a special project. Let us be faithful in whatever the Lord gives us today.

Remember that sometimes we are given what may seem to us a small service, but it may be the Lord first wants to see our faithfulness in the small things before He entrusts more to us!
