His head is as the finest gold; His locks are flowing, black as the raven. Song of Songs 5:11 JND
The bride spoke of her Beloved as the absolutely holy One, who is distinguished from all others. Now she goes into more detail. His head is as the finest gold. The head is the source of thoughts, plans, and purposes. His thoughts and His purposes are pure as fine gold. David says of Him, “But how precious are Thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!” (Ps. 139:17). The Beloved’s thoughts are expressed in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of evil.” What marvelous purposes He has for us, the Church, for which He gave His life! His purpose is to sanctify the Church and bring her “to Himself glorious, having no spot or wrinkle, or any of such things” (Eph. 5:27).
His locks are flowing. No sign of balding or gray hair! Though He is the Ancient of Days there are no signs of aging. His is perpetual youth. Of Him Isaiah writes, “Dost thou not know, hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, Jehovah, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not nor tireth?” (Isa. 40:28). “He is able to save completely those who approach by Him to God, always living to intercede for them” (Heb. 7:25). Of many of the great men of God it is written that they became old, such as Isaac whose eyesight became poor and as a result he was deceived, or David who could not continue as king, his son Solomon replacing him while he was still alive. But Jesus “because of His continuing forever, has the priesthood unchangeable” (Heb. 7:24).
What precious thoughts we gain from Song of Songs 5:11, which reminds us of His good counsels toward us and His unfailing power to fulfill all His promises.
